Orlando Satchell was born on 21st July, 1963 in Birmingham, England. Early on, he dreamed of a career in the culinary arts. He was inspired to be a chef of Caribbean cuisine, being of Jamaican/Barbadian parentage. Graduating from culinary school in England, he spent several years in small hotels in Birmingham and London. He moved to South Beach, Florida where he developed his skills in island cuisine. The restaurant boasted a large clientele of multi-cultural immigrants living in Miami
On his return to London, he had an opportunity to work at the at the Burns Park Plaza Hotel, where he introduced Caribbean cuisine at the hotel’s fine dining restaurant. He then left the Burns Plaza to pursue his own business in catering and consultancy of Caribbean cuisine. Orlando was able to introduce Caribbean cuisine to many top hotels in London. These included Park Lane, Landmark, SAS Radisson and a few others. After a few years in Asia, and equipped with this international experience, Chef Orlando was invited to St. Lucia, as a guest chef to showcase his own unique cuisine.
An opportunity presented itself, when Chef Orlando was invited to establish the very first West Indian Restaurant in Singapore. This proved very successful, but was however very far from home, and his family he had left in London. With that success, he was invited in 1998 to be the Executive Chef of Dasheene Restaurant at the Ladera Resort, in St. Lucia. A most renowned resort, listed at one of the top destinations in world in the Conde Nast Traveller Magazine. Chef Orlando has held that position from then to present. The resort was ranked as No. 2 in the Caribbean in the Travel and Leisure Magazine. He has had the opportunity to prepare the finest menus unique to the resort, and has the opportunity to host many celebrities, including Bill Gates, David Bowie, Matt Damon, Conan O’Brien and many others. In February 2003, he debuted at the prestigious James Beard House in Manhattan, New York. He was at the time, the first St. Lucian chef to be invited to cook there, making it a historic first for the Caribbean island…...
ASPIRATIONS:
During his tenure, he has had the opportunity to create a true culinary experience using local St. Lucian produce.Orlando is very interested in the training of young cooking enthusiasts and encourages cooking activities and competitions among schools on the island.
He was invited to judge the First Caribbean Master Chef Competition, which took place in London some years ago, as well as a judge for the Barbados Secondary School’s competition earlier this year. He continues to inspire the up & coming young ones in developing their own recipes using local products. Orlando has one of his recipes listed in Caribbean Destination Cookbook.
Orlando is one of the advocates for the promotion of healthy lifestyles. He is an avid tennis player, and a supporter of the Breast Cancer movement. He takes part in as many activities to support this cause, as time will permit.
ON THE HORIZON:
Orlando is totally committed to the development of his own brand of Caribbean cooking. ‘Share the love Cuisine’, is a cooking style, coupled with a Caribbean cultural experience. He plans to achieve this by using local island products, and organic fruits and vegetables grown by local farmers.
Presentations using colour, fine dining experience and cultural cooking methods, will be his main aim to showcase Caribbean Cuisine on the World Stage. In doing so, he hopes to expose the talents of Caribbean Chefs, and their outstanding capabilities. The development of young and budding potential professionals is also one of his goals. This can assist our people to earn their place among the best in the world.
